8 Top Job Interviewing Tips For Senior Candidates [Video]

You've gone through the screening process, your CV has impressed and now it's time close the deal in the interview and secure your next job offer. But how should you prepare? Remembering a few simple tips and techniques can go a long way in helping you make the right impression within your job interview and increase your chances of being presented with a job offer. We asked eight of our experienced recruitment practice heads what their top tip would be to a senior candidate going to interview.

1. Ask About The Person Doing The Interviewing

If you are working with a recruitment consultant, ask them about the person who'll be doing the interviewing. You can quickly build rapport with them if you know a little bit of background about them. Alternatively, take a look at LinkedIn and see if you have any shared context.

2. Prepare By Reviewing Skills & Competencies

Our second interview tip is all about your preparation. The clue to what's to come in the interview is actually going to be detailed within the job description that you're issued. If you go down to the competency area or the skills area of the job description, there'll be a list of things that you know you're going to be questioned on. My tip is to go through those different skills and competencies, think about your experiences to date, and pre-plan your answers to those competencies rather than trying to think of them on the spot whilst you're in the interview.

3. Remember: Situation, Task, Action, Result

Many of the questions you will be asked will be competency-based interviewing questions. When asked a competency based question, remember to use 'S.T.A.R.' within your answer. S.T.A.R stands for: Situation, Task, Action, Result, so think about the situation, the scenario, what the task and objective was, think about the action you took, your thinking, how you arrived at the conclusion you arrived at, and of course the result. Talk about the success you achieved and make it relevant to the client you're talking to.

4. Be Clear About Your Role And Responsibilities Within Projects

Be prepared to talk about specific accomplishments and projects that you've been involved in and be clear what your role within that was. Focus on I, not we. It's really important when you're speaking to employers they know specifically what your role was in that project and not that you were just part of a bigger team. Sometimes this can feel at odds with how you might behave in the workplace, as deferring praise onto those around you is often a preferred style of senior managers, but in an interview environment it's important to be clear about what your accountabilities were within a project and the difference you brought to the team.

5. Remember Your Body Language

My top interview tip centres around self-awareness. It's natural to be nervous in an interview and we are often inclined to do a lot with our hands or speak very quickly, but remember that body language accounts for a significant proportion of the messaging you are sending to an interviewer. Try holding your hands if you're likely to fidget, and make a conscious effort to speak louder which will help you to come across confident and clearly.

6. Manage Your Engagement

When interviewing make sure you manage your engagement. Make a strong first impression and resist the urge to act subservient to the interviewer by giving them all the power and waiting for them to ask a question before responding. Interviewing is a two-way process and as such your conversation needs to be on a peer-to-peer level. This helps build rapport, understanding, and credibility between the two parties, and remember that the interview is as much for you to determine whether you like them as it is for them to determine whether they like you. Ensure that you're present, in the moment and make sure that there is a balance between communicating and listening, mirroring body language, and ensuring that you're able to get all your points across. You really should be looking at a two-thirds dialogue from yourself, a third from the interviewer.

7. Close At The End Of The Interview

Our next top interviewing tip is about the close and the end of the interview. You want to ask them a number of questions and have a structure, but one of those questions needs to be, "Do you have any reservations about me at this stage?" That gives you an opportunity to then overcome those objections. The final part to that question will be, "What are the next stages in the process?" You're able to leave that interview understanding what the next steps are and then start preparing for the next stage.

8. Finish Strong

Our final job interviewing tip is to finish strong. Don't leave your interview with any uncertainty about your commitment to the job. Our experience is that often interviewers come back to us and say that although the candidate can do the job and is more than capable, what worries them is the candidate's motivation, drive, and enthusiasm to want to take the job on, so it's critical that you convey that.
